Marble Inlay Flooring: Designs, Cost and How It's Made

Marble inlay flooring with a central floor medallion by Nexus Inlay Creation

Marble inlay flooring is a floor in which semi-precious stones and coloured marble are cut to shape and set by hand into a marble base — pietra dura, applied to the floor. This guide covers marble inlay flooring designs, where it works, the marble and stones used, how it is made and installed, what it costs, and how to care for it.

What is marble inlay flooring?

Marble inlay flooring sets cut pieces of coloured stone flush into a marble floor so the surface is one smooth, seamless plane — the design is in the stone, not printed on a tile. The craft is pietra dura, or parchin kari in India, the same art seen on the Taj Mahal. Because it is solid stone throughout, an inlaid marble floor keeps its colour and depth for generations.

Marble inlay flooring designs

Most marble inlay flooring designs fall into a few families, and they are often combined:

Floor medallions

A marble floor medallion is a single ornamental motif — floral, geometric, or a compass/rosette — set at the centre of an entrance, foyer, or under a chandelier. It is the most popular marble inlay flooring design and the usual starting point.

Borders and accents

A marble floor border design runs inlay along the edges of a room, around a medallion, or as a runner through a corridor. Borders can frame a plain marble field at lower cost than a full inlay.

Full-floor patterns and mandalas

Repeating geometry, Mughal floral fields, and mandala-style compositions cover the whole floor, suited to grand foyers, lobbies, and temples.

Where marble inlay flooring works best: foyers, living rooms and lobbies

Inlaid flooring is a statement surface, so it is placed where it will be seen: entrance foyers, the centre of living and dining rooms, hotel and office receptions, restaurants and banquet halls, temples, and the halls of larger villas. A medallion suits a single focal point; borders and full floors suit larger, open spaces.

Marble and stones used in inlay flooring

The base is usually white Makrana marble — the marble of the Taj Mahal — or Italian marble for specific tones. Into it we set semi-precious stones such as lapis, malachite, carnelian, jasper, agate, and mother-of-pearl, with brass for fine lines.

Polished vs honed finish

A high polish gives the classic mirror shine but is smooth underfoot. For bathrooms, entrances, and high-traffic areas, a honed, matte finish adds grip while keeping the inlay crisp. The finish is chosen to suit the room.

How marble inlay flooring is made and installed

The design is drawn to scale and transferred onto the marble; grooves are carved for each element; each stone is cut by hand to fit flush; and the surface is polished until the floor is one even plane. Because a full floor is too large to move in one piece, it is made in numbered sections that lock together on site — we guide your mason through installation, or arrange fitting for larger projects.

How much does marble inlay flooring cost?

Marble inlay flooring is quoted per project, because the price depends on the density of the inlay, the stones, the marble grade, and the floor size — a bordered medallion floor costs far less than a fully inlaid floral field. Hand-inlaid flooring sits well above plain marble flooring. For market ranges and what drives the price, see our marble inlay cost guide.

How to care for a marble inlay floor

Wipe with a soft, damp cloth and a pH-neutral cleaner, avoid acidic or harsh chemicals, wipe spills promptly, and reseal occasionally. Cared for this way, a marble inlay floor lasts for generations. Ready to plan one? See our marble flooring service or tell us your idea.

Frequently asked questions

What is marble inlay flooring called?

It is pietra dura, or parchin kari in India — semi-precious stones cut and inlaid flush into a marble floor.

What are the main marble inlay flooring designs?

Floor medallions, borders and accents, and full-floor patterns or mandalas — often combined. A central medallion is the most popular.

Is a marble inlay floor slippery?

A high polish is smooth, so for wet or high-traffic areas we supply a honed, matte finish that adds grip while keeping the inlay sharp.

How much does marble inlay flooring cost?

It is quoted per project, based on inlay density, stones, marble grade, and size. See our cost guide for market ranges, then send your floor plan for an exact quote.

Do you install marble inlay flooring?

We make and supply the floor in numbered sections with a fitting guide; installation is usually by your local mason, whom we guide, and we can arrange it for larger projects.
